Touted as one of the best and most authentic Chinese / Shanghainese dumpling places around Melbourne, there is a constant queue snaking out the store-front every meal-time. At the common market-price of $8.30 for dumplings, this small eatery does not disappoint.
This dish (紅油抄手) is one of my favourite dishes, and Shanghai Street Dumpling does one authentic version with a delicious twist. The wonton skin is light and silky, enclosing a juicy pork-and-prawn centre. The wontons are then served with chilli-oil and (here is the best bit) a sprinkle of freshly cut spring onions and crushed peanuts coated in a yummy sesame paste. A little different but wholly delicious.
The store has a glass window that peers into the kitchen so curious customers may watch the Chinese aunties make their dumplings by hand. Over all, the small eatery is cheap, quick, delicious and cleaner than most - worth the wait!
